Course Brief: Community Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) has been put forward as one of the mainstreams in any development plan and programs/projects. CBDRM, where people are at the heart of decision making, is a process of disaster risk management at the community level.
The CBDRM course aims to provide vulnerability assessment (VA) at the community level by identifying important community concerns such as livelihood and consumption, housing and social infrastructure, and gender and intra-household relations. The course discusses the basic approach to designing and implementing CBDRM programs that includes the process and the tools of participatory risk assessment, methods of analyzing hazards, hazard exposure and community vulnerabilities. It also focuses on resources that a communities need to reduce their vulnerability and adopt mitigation measures. Participants also go through an exercise on designing a CBDRM program followed by a field trip to a project site focusing on disaster resilient communities.
