Course Brief:
This course enables participants to formulate various control measures and minimization alternatives for toxic and hazardous wastes, and to plan appropriate systems for the treatment and disposal system for toxic and hazardous waste. The course content covers overview of toxic and hazardous waste management, toxic waste generation and composition, toxic and hazardous waste treatment and management.

The course integrates various case studies and group exercises related to policy issues and challenges, technological intervention and management strategies. Study visits are organized to toxic and hazardous waste management treatment sites, sources of pollution and affected communities, and waste collection and transfer centers.

Overview of Toxic and Hazardous Waste Management
Overview of health and environmental effects of hazardous waste; conceptual framework for hazardous waste management; strategic hazardous waste management; policy and regulatory measures for waste management processes and generation; storage; transportation; treatment and disposal and risk assessment in hazardous waste management.

  • Toxic Waste Generation and Composition
    Sources; types and classification of toxic waste; life cycle assessment; waste reduction; recycle; reuse and resource recovery.
  • Toxic and Hazardous Waste Treatment and Management
    Waste treatment processes; technology choices for toxic and hazardous waste treatment; hazardous waste final disposal; safety; mitigation and disaster preparedness measures.
