Course Brief:
This course aims to enhance participants’ ability in commercial production planning, management of vegetables, tropical fruits, flowers and ornamental plants and to focus on crops produced in order to make it available commercially, particularly with those which have high market potential in participants’ home countries. Content of this course coversproduction planning, production technology, vegetable and flower production, tropical fruit production and horticultural marketing for local demand and exports.

The course involves case studies on agronomic, economic and marketing management of vegetables, fresh tropical fruits and selected ornamental plants. It also includes field visits to research and extension stations, leading farms, nurseries, producer cooperatives, agribusiness establishments, packaging and storage facilities for local supermarkets and export markets, quarantine facilities and process for export market, wholesale markets for ornamental plants, vegetables and fruits.

Tentative Course Contents:

  • Production Technology
    Farm layout and design; soil fertility evaluation and management; chemical and hormone treatments; chemical and organic fertilization; irrigation techniques.
  • Vegetable and Flower Production
    Production schedule planning; introduction to micro-propagation techniques; crop maintenance; quality and grading criteria; post- harvest management.
  • Tropical Fruit Production
    Plant propagation techniques; pruning and training techniques; crop maintenance; quality and grading criteria; off-season fruit production; post-harvest management.
  • Horticultural Marketing
    Seasonal supply and price analysis; production contract and credit financing; packaging and presentation; production cooperatives.
  • Case Studies and Study Visits
    • Case studies on various aspects of agronomic, economic and marketing management of vegetables, fresh tropical fruits and selected ornamental plants.
